Protecting our Children on the Internet.

"The most effective, reliable, Internet safety filter is an
involved, informed, and aware parent,
and an educated and ethical kid."

A Message to Parents and Kids

The internet, like any other tool, can be used safely or dangerously.  By being informed and by communicating with each other, kids and parents can build the foundation for responsible and safe internet use.

This site, developed by an internet expert and a child psychologist, is a resource that provides:

  • Many very important ‘Do’s and Don’ts Tips’ for parents and kids
  • Suggestions for ‘rules’ to guide internet use
  • Helpful resources such as videos and books
  • Links to useful websites devoted to internet safety
  • Information on effective software that can be used to support safe internet use

To start the discussion we offer a look  at a site by National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Internet Ground Rules For Kids called NetSmart Workshop

   1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents' permission.
   2. I will tell my parents right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
   3. I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my mom or dad along.
   4. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents.
   5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do, I will tell my parents right away so that they can contact the online service.

When  you use this site please let us know what you think. We have not had time to go through every suggestion of books, links and software and would like to get some real world comments.  Go to Categories and click on an article then click on the comment button and let us know what you think.

By working together, and by keeping the lines of communication open, parents and kids can enjoy the wonders of the internet… safely!
